Abstract

This book presents the state of the art of learning factories. It outlines the motivations, historic background, and the didactic foundations of learning factories. Definitions of the term learning factory and an updated morphological model are provided as well as a detailed overview of existing learning factory approaches in industry and academia, showing the broad range of different applications and varying contents in all continents. International learning factory best-practice examples are presented in detailed and structured manner. The state of the art of learning factories curricula design and their use to enhance learning and research as well as potentials and limitations are presented. Further research priorities and innovative learning factory concepts to overcome current barriers are offered. While today numerous learning factories have been built in industry (big automotive companies, pharma companies, etc.) and academia in the last decades, a comprehensive handbook for the scientific community and practitioners alike is still missing. The book addresses therefore both researchers in production-related areas that want to conduct industry-relevant research and education, as well as managers and engineers in industry, who are searching for an effective way to train their employees. In addition to this, the learning factory concept is also regarded as an innovative learning concept in the field of didactics.

Abstract

The book provides a comprehensive analysis of Engineering Education in industrialising countries, with Southern Africa as the case study, benchmarked on institutions from the industrialised world, with UK institutions as the reference. This was motivated by the perennial shortage of engineers and engineering skills to drive industry in Southern Africa, compounded by the mismatch of skills between those produced by tertiary institutions and those required by industry. This book focuses on the insufficiencies in training, through addressing the gap where the majority of engineering academics’ qualifications at MSc/MEng level fall short of the internationally acceptable PhD/DEng/DTech. In order to address such insufficiencies, the book proposes and advocates for reskilling and doctoral training of engineering academics through the proposed and established DTCs within the region. The book is targeted at graduate students, engineering academics, researchers, university administrators, foreign aid agencies, captains of industry and policy-makers in governments. To all these readers, the book offers: Development of indigenous engineering capacities and skills for economic growth in industrialising countries; Bridging the gap between industry and academia through areas of strategic importance; Upskilling of engineers and engineering academics to PhD level through DTCs, for the provision of solutions to national and regional challenges.

Abstract

This book aims to provide an advanced R software approach that can carry out rainfall trend analysis using Mann-Kendall and Sen’s slope estimator tests. The research study follows a systematic approach while utilizing R software as it can greatly facilitate the analysis of rainfall trends. About 30 stations located in the study area and 41 to 50 years’ time series were selected for the purpose of analysis. The data for the research was collected from the State Water Data Centre (SWDC) in Gujarat, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune, DAAC (NASA), and ESRI. Cluster analysis has been performed to analyze the variability of the mean rainfall. The stations have been divided into 2 clusters with 17 and 13 stations in each cluster which significantly differ from each other. This book is aimed at researchers, scientists and government organizations working in the field of climate change. .

Abstract

This book examines the comprehensive engineering education reform since China put forward its New Engineering Education policy in early 2017. It presents systematic reform measures at micro-level, such as national policies on massively building up new programs that cater to emerging state-of-the-art technologies in the industry, on developing synergistic approaches to education through tightened university–industry collaboration, and on formulating the four-level quality assurance mechanisms. The book also addresses meso-level institutional schemes and implementations at several case universities researched, and micro-level issues directly regarding teaching and student learning based on empirical studies. Overall, this book provides the international community the knowledge of how international benchmarking of university engineering education is reflected in the Chinese context, and helps readers to gain an understanding the success and failure of different practices in achieving relevant reform goals.

Abstract

This book is the first academic work on the philosophy of engineering in China that reflects two decades of research. It puts forward a new thesis, namely that the core maxim in the philosophy of engineering is “I create, therefore I am,” which is radically different from the Cartesian maxim: “I think, therefore I am.” In addition, the book offers the first detailed portrait of the roots and evolution of the philosophy of engineering in China. The book begins by discussing the triptych thesis of science, technology and engineering, which argues that there are a number of important distinctions between the three, e.g. scientific activities are chiefly based on discovery, while technological activities center on invention, and engineering activities focus on creation. Considering the latest developments in the philosophy of engineering, the author also analyzes engineering communities, engineering practice and a micro–meso–macro framework. In subsequent chapters, the author separately analyzes the three stages of engineering activities: planning, operating and using artifacts. In the closing chapter, two views on the philosophy of engineering (as a new subdiscipline of philosophy and as a philosophy in its own right) are briefly explained.

Abstract

This book presents a critical examination of conversations between engineering, social sciences, and the humanities asking whether their conversations have come of age. These conversations are important because ultimately their outcome have real world consequences in engineering education and practice, and for the social and material world we inhabit. Taken together the 21 chapters provide scholarly-argued responses to the following questions. Why are these conversations important for engineering, for social sciences, and for the humanities? Are there key places in practice, in the curriculum, and in institutions where these conversations can develop best? What are the barriers to successful conversations? What proposals can be made for deepening these conversations for the future? How would we know that the conversations have come of age, and who gets to decide? The book appeals to scholarly audiences that come together through their work in engineering education and practice. The chapters of the book probes and access the meetings and conversations, and they explore new avenues for strengthening dialogues that transcend narrow disciplinary confines and divisions. “The volume offers a rich collection of descriptive resources and theoretical tools that will be useful for researchers of engineering practices, and for those aiming to reshape the engineering lifeworld through new policies. The book depicts the current state of the art of the most visible SSH contributions to shaping engineering practices, as well as a map of research gaps and policy problems that still need to be explored.” - Dr. Ir. Lavinia Marin, TU Delft, Electrical Engineering and Philosophy.

Abstract

This book takes a fresh look at the fundamental character of education, its history, interaction with society, purpose, changing focus over time and interactions with technology. It surveys the role of research in increasing the body of knowledge leading to new technologies that have helped serve the needs of humankind. In our lifetime there have been profound changes to the world we live in; the technologies used, the problems we struggle with, and the education systems intended to prepare this and following generations for the future. Many of the problems we face now are more complex than in earlier times, requiring broadly based approaches our traditional silo specialisations are ill-prepared to deal with. They involve technologies whose range of positive and negative effects are not well understood. Many of these problems are global in nature and can no longer be treated just as local issues. Our current approach to education does not adequately prepare us to tackle these problems. New approaches to education are needed to prepare us for the changes that are to come. The future of our planet, our civilisation, our community and our economy depend on it. This book proposes changes that will better prepare us for this future.
